Your Essential Moving Checklist

Your Essential Moving Checklist

A successful move starts long before the moving truck arrives. Planning ahead and knowing what to expect can save you stress, time, and money. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) created a helpful Moving Checklist to guide you every step of the way.

Before You Move:
Do your research. Ask for recommendations from friends or family and check the company’s record with the Better Business Bureau. Make sure your mover is registered with the FMCSA and has a valid USDOT number. Request written estimates from at least three companies and compare services, costs, and insurance options. Confirm pickup and delivery dates in writing and understand your mover’s dispute resolution program.

Moving Day:
Be present when the movers arrive. Review and sign all documents carefully — including the bill of lading and inventory list. Walk through your home one last time before the truck leaves to ensure nothing is left behind, and keep your paperwork until your items are delivered and settled.

Delivery Day:
Supervise unloading and note any damaged or missing items on the inventory before signing. Maintain open communication with your mover throughout the process.

Moving doesn’t have to be overwhelming — a little preparation makes all the difference.
