Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move

Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move

Moving to a new home or office is a big step—and knowing your rights helps make it a safe one. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) ensures that all interstate moving companies follow clear rules to protect customers from fraud, damage, and unexpected costs.

When planning your move, make sure your mover is registered with FMCSA and provides a written estimate after a physical or virtual survey of your items. Movers must give you important documents such as the “Ready to Move” brochure and this official booklet, “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.”

  • File a claim for loss or damage within nine months of delivery.

  • Request arbitration if you disagree with your mover about charges or compensation.

As a customer, you are responsible for reading all documents carefully, being available on pickup and delivery days, and promptly reporting any changes or issues. Choosing a legitimate, transparent mover helps prevent delays, hidden charges, or lost belongings.
